UP "Giant of the West" - EMD DDA40X Centennial

Union Pacific experimented in the 1960's with high horsepower double diesels from all three major builders - EMD, GE & Alco. The ultimate double-diesel was created in an effort between the UP Mechanical Department and EMD. They had the latest state-of-the-art mechanical and electrical components at the time - including two 16 cylinder, 3,300 HP 645-E3A prime movers for a total of a reliable 6,600 HP! These were released to the railroad during UP's Centennial year - 1969. For that reason, they were called "Centennials". These units were, at the time, "The Worlds Most Powerful Diesel Locomotive". UP finally had 47 of these giants which were used throughout the system.

There has been only one accurate plastic HO model of these locomotives made - by Bachmann. They were initially issued with an inferior power system consisting of a pancake motor powering only one truck. Several years later, they were reissued with a much improved power chassis with two motor/flywheel combinations and with all wheels powered. We were closer to the ultimate plastic DDA40X - one problem remained - Bachmann's paint job. In the past, modelers have tried stripping the heavy paint off  these locos with mixed success. We have a better solution!

Updated Bachmann Chassis in these locomotives

We have made a special purchase of a limited number of UNDECORATED Bachmann DDA40X loco's with the new chassis (see below). We have also had one custom painted and they look great! These units have had 4 different paint schemes:

1) As delivered - with a "Union Pacific Railroad" shield.

Near Hermosa Tunnel in August 1973

2) Shortly thereafter, UP removed the "Railroad" from their shields. Initially, this word was simply taped over.

August 1975

3) When they were repainted or during major servicing, the older shield was replaced with a new shield. This was the most common.

4) One unit (6936) has been retained as a part of UP's "Heritage Fleet" based in Cheyenne. It is currently painted in a "Lightening Stripe with Wings" scheme.

What can it look like? How about below!
